Geothermal Heat Pump Cost Ontario
No reliable Ontario-wide average was found. Compare your quote with two transparent public references below, then price the loop, equipment, and house changes separately. They are examples, not a survey, government average, or promised range. [1][2]
What to know before requesting quotes
- The public references are not a provincial market survey. Site access, the ground loop, equipment tier, and house changes can move the quote substantially.
- The current Ontario rebate is not one universal $12,000 cheque. For owned homes, it is a $3,000 flat amount for Enbridge natural-gas heat, or $2,000 per ton up to $12,000 for electricity, oil, propane, or wood. [3]
- Get program approval before installation. The participating contractor submits the pre-installation application. [3]
- For a vertical closed loop deeper than 5 metres, ask who holds the required Ontario Environmental Compliance Approval. [6]
Two public price references
These references are deliberately shown with their limits. They are useful for setting a budget, but neither replaces a site-specific written quote.

Use the two amounts as quote-checking anchors only. They do not prove a typical Ontario low, high, or average. Ask each bidder to list exclusions so you are comparing the same scope.
What changes the quote
- Loop type and site access. Horizontal loops need excavation area. Vertical loops trade yard area for drilling and approval work.
- House load.The program requires the loop sizing and heat-pump capacity to suit the home's heating load. Ask for the load calculation, not a size chosen from floor area alone. [3]
- Distribution.Existing ducts or hydronic emitters may need changes. The City's cost reference explicitly excludes ductwork. [1]
- Electrical scope. Panel, service, wiring, and backup-heat work may be separate. Both public price references warn about electrical exclusions or added cost. [1][2]
- Restoration. Confirm who repairs lawn, driveway, hardscape, and interior finishes after trenching or drilling.
Ontario geothermal rebate: exact homeowner version
The Home Renovation Savings heat-pump stream is jointly administered in Ontario by Enbridge Gas and the IESO. It is one provincial program, not a federal HRS program or a second Save on Energy rebate. Save on Energy continues to list ground source heat pumps at up to $12,000, with the amount determined by system size. [3][4]

The official requirements say the contractor must submit the pre-installation application and receive written approval before installation. Without an approved pre-installation application, the homeowner is not eligible for the rebate. Water-to-air models must be active on NRCan's eligible product list; water-to-water models must be ENERGY STAR certified, available in Canada, and supported by an AHRI certificate. Direct-expansion systems do not qualify. [3]
Heat pumps are offered as a single-upgrade path without a home energy assessment. Do not confuse that with skipping pre-approval or product eligibility. The heat-pump stream covers eligible Enbridge residential customers and eligible oil-, propane-, wood-, or electric-heated homes connected to the IESO-controlled grid; the official requirements exclude Cornwall Electric. Vertical-loop approval is a quote item
Ontario Regulation 98/12 and the province's current guidance say installers or drillers need an Environmental Compliance Approval, including a work plan, when a vertical closed-loop system extends more than 5 metres below the original ground surface. Open-loop systems using a well follow separate well, water-taking, and wastewater-discharge requirements. [6]
For a vertical bid, request these items in writing:
- the approval holder and approval number;
- who is responsible for the required work plan;
- total proposed bore depth and loop design;
- what happens if hazardous gas or flowing water is encountered;
- grouting, pressure-test, commissioning, and restoration scope.
Do not accept a generic savings or payback promise
NRCan says actual savings vary with climate, the old heating system, fuel and electricity prices, system size, borefield configuration, seasonal energy balance, and equipment performance. It also says the result depends on how the system is designed and operated. [5]
Ask for an annual model that shows electricity use, backup heat, current fuel displaced, fixed utility charges, maintenance, and the assumed rate escalation. Run at least a low- and high-price case. Treat a single payback year without those inputs as sales copy, not a decision model.
