SEER2
Metrics and Efficiency Ratings - HVAC Costs pillar
Also known as: SEER 2, Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio 2
Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio 2. The 2023+ standard for rating central AC and heat pump cooling efficiency, replacing SEER. Higher = more efficient.
SEER2 replaced SEER in 2023 as the regulatory cooling-efficiency rating for central air conditioners and heat pumps. The new test conditions raise external static pressure, producing SEER2 values about 4.5% lower than older SEER ratings for the same unit. Canadian minimums under federal Energy Efficiency Regulations now reference SEER2. ENERGY STAR certified central AC requires SEER2 of 15.2 or higher (split system, southern tier). HSPF2 is the equivalent change for heating-mode heat pump rating.
