An air-source heat pump rated to deliver useful heat at sub-freezing outdoor temperatures, typically maintaining 70%+ of nameplate capacity at -15C.

Cold-climate heat pumps (ccASHP) use enhanced vapor injection compressors and variable-speed inverters to maintain heating capacity in Ontario winters. The ENERGY STAR Cold Climate certification (Region V) requires HSPF2 of 8.1+ and 70%+ capacity retention at -15C. Brands selling ccASHPs in Ontario include Mitsubishi Hyper Heat, Daikin Aurora, Lennox SLP99V, Carrier Infinity Greenspeed, LG ProDry. Properly sized, a ccASHP can be a primary heat source down to -25C with a backup electric or gas auxiliary.
