CO Alarm
Safety - Consumer Protection pillar
Also known as: carbon monoxide alarm, carbon monoxide detector, CO detector
Carbon monoxide alarm. Required by Ontario Building Code 9.32.3 outside every sleeping area in any home with a fuel-burning appliance or attached garage.
Ontario Building Code 9.32.3 (Hawkins-Gignac amendment) requires a CSA-certified CO alarm in any home with a fuel-burning appliance (gas furnace, water heater, boiler, fireplace, range, dryer) or an attached garage. Placement: outside every sleeping area, on every level. Hardwired with battery backup is required in new construction; battery-only is permitted in existing homes. Alarms must be replaced every 7-10 years per the manufacturer's stamp. This is the most-failed item on Ontario home inspections.
